HUMIDITY AND CONDENSATION PROBLEMS AT RANDERS BREWERY ARE SOLVED

THE SOLUTION WAS THE DANTHERM CDP 125 DEHUMIDIFIER

Randers Brewery is a successful microbrewery in Denmark. Exactly that success made them contact Dantherm for help and guidance.

Beer production generates high amounts of steam and humidity. Neither one nor the other are desirable in a brewery, since they bring about rot and fungal spores in the production area. Therefore, Dantherm was contacted to find a solution to meet  the problem. The solution was a Dantherm CDP 125 dehumidifier.

 Therefore it’s of great importance to protect basic raw materials such as malt and wort from rot and mildew. During the bottling and cooling process, the production is highly responsive to both bacterium and fungal spores. That is why it is important to maintain a steam level as low as possible.

“Furthermore we have to take care of the building. The building is not constructed for the large amount of beer production followed by cleaning at high temperatures”, says the brewer Jesper Petersen

The Concerns:

The concern about steam in the beer production and the following cleaning springs from the open containers. Steam generates condensation and that is not compatible with customer demands or the standards of the The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Levnedsmiddelkontrollen). Therefore, finding a fast and cost-effective solution to the humidity problems had top-priority, explains Mr Petersen. He also points out that production of unpasteurised beer requires a reasonable degree of sterility. Mr. Petersen continues: “when water is running down the walls, it’s difficult to keep the area clean”.

Finding the solution

This was the reason why Dantherm was contacted. We overlooked the production data, combined with the water use. Hereby we were able to estimate the humidity stain in the production area.

Which dehumidifier to choose?

With our knowledge of the estimated humidity stain in the production area in mind, we recommended to install a dehumidifier type CDP 125. This type of a dehumidifier recirculates the air and uses the energy in the process of dehumidification to heat up the air in the production area.

Now the condensation problems are history. Mr Petersen also expects that installing a dehumidifier will positively affect the frequency of future customer complaints.

In practice the dehumidifier is mounted on the wall and the humid air is led to the dehumidifier by ducts in the entire production area. The humidity in the area is regulated by a hygrostat. The dehumidifier is automatically activated when the relative humidity level is higher than 65%, since mildew often builds under those conditions.
